The Complete Tea Guide

Secrets of OP / Qalam Tea; The Bold, Large-Leaf Classic

Orange Pekoe (OP), known locally as Qalam tea, is made from the larger, fully developed leaves of the tea bush. Unlike finer grades or broken teas, Qalam tea goes through a gentle rolling process that preserves the entire leaf structure in long, wire-like shapes.

This large-leaf structure gives OP tea its distinct properties: an exceptionally clear, bright copper liquor and a remarkably smooth taste with minimal astringency. Because the leaves are large, they infuse slowly, requiring 15 to 20 minutes to fully develop. This makes it the perfect tea to keep in the pot for long conversations, as it will not turn bitter or over-extract quickly.

The large, whole leaves of OP tea tell a story of gradual maturation. The slow steep ensures a clean, sweet cup every time.

Miad's Qalam OP collection represents the pinnacle of this traditional style, offering a bright, clear infusion that has been a staple of family tables for decades.
